New England Hiking Holidays

Oregon
The Columbia River Gorge and Mount Hood

New England Hikling Holidays - OregonWithin easy reach of the great city of Portland, Oregon, lie two of the Pacific Northwest's most intriguing scenic areas, the Columbia River Gorge and Mount Hood.

The Columbia River Gorge is a true wonderland of waterfalls that was explored by Lewis and Clark near the end of their famous journey and is the nation's only National Scenic Area. Mount Hood at 11240 feet is Oregon's highest peak. The slopes encompass 5 wilderness areas, jewel-like alpine lakes and stunning views of the snow- capped Cascade peaks.

Our journey begins less than an hour from Portland at the elegantly rustic, Skamania Lodge. A spectacular drive along the historic Columbia River Highway Scenic Byway leads us across the Bridge of the Gods over to Washington State and this magnificent lodge.

A vast array of hiking opportunities await. Within the gorge are more than 30 accessible waterfalls including Ponytail, Waclellah and the most famous, Multnomah Falls with its 620' drop. The 167 miles of maintained trails in the gorge offer both easy to moderate and more challenging paths through lush forests and delicate botanical areas. The hike along Eagle Creek is an unforgettable experience.

New England Hikling Holidays - OregonOn our third day we pass through the Hood River Valley, a mecca of cherry, peach, pear and apple groves on our way to the Mount Hood Area. Our hiking options bring us to crystal clear Lost Lake and our first views of Mount Hood.

Our last 2 nights are spent at The Resort at the Mountain, at the base of Mt. Hood (as you might expect from the name!). This fine resort offers a host of amenities and fine dining as well as a perfect location for exploring the area. Trails lead through magnificent stands of old growth timber, up to high alpine lakes or perhaps, if you choose, to the top of Tom, Dick and Harry Mountain with it's views of Mt. Rainier, Mt. St Helens and The Sisters in central Oregon. Another hike leads along the quiet shores of the lower Salmon River in beautiful old growth forest.

New England Hikling Holidays - OregonThis trip begins on Sunday and ends after a morning hike and lunch on Friday. (except where noted)
