Rich in history and resplendent in the charm of Mexican tile-paved enclaves, Palm Springs is one of the jewels of desert cities. Known as the palm of God’s hand by the local Agua Caliente Indians, this home to famous celebrities and world class golf courses is also a perfect base to explore some wonderful hiking opportunities in sunny Southern California. Our days of hiking in nearby canyons and through the fascinating scenery of this region are complimented by the fine restaurants and elegant shops of downtown Palm Springs.

Our lodging in Palm Springs is the intimate and elegant Villa Royale Inn. Reminiscent of a Tuscan estate, meticulous attention to detail is evident in tranquil courtyards filled with fragrant citrus, jasmine and lavender. Each room is tastefully furnished with antiques and opens to a courtyard with gentle fountains, one of two heated pools or the Jacuzzi. These beautiful grounds are framed with spectacular mountain views.

To the north of Palm springs is Joshua Tree National Park a land of exposed granite monoliths and rugged mountains of twisted rock forming a giant desert mosaic of immense beauty. We’ll hike to Crowne Prince Lookout for a close up look at these wonderful fields of granite boulders scattered across the floor like marbles of the gods. Hike to the summit of Ryan Mountains for expansive views of the surrounding desert and the towering San Jacinto and San Bernadino mountains. Another hike leads through a forest of Joshua trees to the “Wonderland of Rocks”, an area well deserving of its name. A visit to this arid region is not complete without hiking to an oasis, and we’ll also have the opportunity to visit one of these lush areas.

For a change of pace we’ll hike in the nearby Indian canyons. Part of the reservation of the Agua Calienta Band of Cahuilla Indians, the canyons have been home to these industrious and creative people for centuries. We’ll explore the trails of Palm Canyon, Murray Canyon and Andreas Canyon, the largest California Fan Palm Oasis in the world. (Later in the week, we’ll take a guided hike into the wonderful Tahquitz Canyon. Closed to visitors for over 30 years, the canyon is now accessible only with a guide, who shares with hikers much of the heritage and character of these native people.)

Trips begin with dinner on Sunday and end after hiking and lunch on Thursday.
