Charleston & Congaree Nat’l Park
After a night in the splendid King’s Courtyard Inn in Charleston we visit the Old Santee Canal and the Audubon Center at Beidler Forest, a wonderful introduction to the landscapes that define coastal South Carolina. Giant old-growth Tupelo trees, spanish moss, colorful birds, lazy rivers and limestone bluffs provide a varied backdrop for these easy-going hikes.
Two nights at the convenient Clark’s Inn give us a full day to explore Congaree National Park. This park protects the largest contiguous area of old growth bottomland forest remaining in the United States. It is a world of primeval forest, champion trees, and diverse life. Over thirty miles of trail and boardwalk give us many options into the heart of this wilderness.
The next day, in the sand hills of Poinsett State Park we find an unusual mix of plants and history. Imagine finding mountain laurel draped with Spanish moss. Later, at the Santee National Wildlife Refuge, we hike a network of causeways that give us a great chance to see migrating waterfowl and wading birds.
Back in Charleston and the King’s Courtyard Inn for two more nights and a trip to the beach. We hike along the Edisto River past ancient native shell mounds and salt marsh to the beach at Edisto. The Dungannon Plantation Preserve protects a quiet tupelo swamp that is home to nesting Wood Storks in season.
Our last day can be spent exploring historic Charleston or visiting nearby Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, one of the old riverside plantations.
