Lake Tahoe

New England Hiking Holidays - Lake TahoeFew places in the world combine mountain and lakeside scenery as does Lake Tahoe. Straddling the California/Nevada border, Lake Tahoe is a lush oasis surrounded by the Sierra Nevada mountains, just an hour’s drive from the Nevada Desert.

We begin our journey at the newly built Cedar House Sport Hotel in the historic town of Truckee, California.  You will enjoy every detail of this wonderfully unique inn which attends to every detail from the European-style linens to the sumptuous breakfasts.

One hike leads along the lake shore to Emerald Bay and the Scandinavian style mansion, Vikingsholm. The clear blue water of the lake, the sight of Eagle Falls and the snow-capped peaks in the distance make for a stunning day’s hike.

Other paths wind their way from the lake shore up to the summits of rocky peaks that surround this High Sierra jewel. Here we have so many choices, but our favorite is the trek to the top of Ellis Peak with its breathtaking views of both the Desolation Wilderness and Lake Tahoe and a spectacular lunch spot next to a high alpine lake.

Our 5-day tour continues among the peaks of Squaw Valley, site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. PlumpJack Squaw Valley Inn is our home for the next two nights. One of our trails leads right from the door of the inn to the top of Shirley Canyon and a stretch of the famous Pacific Crest Trail, the 2,000+ mile trail that leads from Mexico to Canada.

New England Hiking Holidays - Lake TahoeNatural Beauty and local history abound as we head out to hike Mt. Judah and and Donner Peak, named after the (in) famous pioneer tragedy from 1846. This area is one of the last places in Tahoe to lose its winter snow so abundant wildflowers including mariposa lilies welcome us well into the fall. We hope you can share with us the rich history of the rail roads, gold mines and pioneers among the snow-capped peaks of Lake Tahoe.

Trips begin with dinner on Sunday and end after hiking and lunch on Friday.
