The Northeast Kingdom of Vermont is one of the most beautiful unspoiled landscapes in the country. Sculpted nearly a million years ago from continental collisions, glacial activity and natural erosion, time has softened the landscape to form distinctive rolling hills, rising mountains, thick forest, lush pastures, pristine lakes and meandering streams.
We begin our tour in the heart of “The Kingdom” at the comfortable Highland Lodge on beautiful Caspian Lake, a refuge from the hectic pace of modern life. Trails lead us through tunnels of huge maple trees as we pass traditional Vermont farms stopping to enjoy, or perhaps photograph one of the many serene lakes that dot the landscape. The jewel of the Northeast Kingdom has to be Lake Willoughby, framed by the sheer, glacially carved cliffs of Mount Pisgah and Mount Hor. Both peaks rise abruptly out of the waters edge and can be reached by scenic trails that offer sweeping views, alpine plant life, and perhaps a view of nesting peregrine falcons.
Our last two days are spent at The Stowehof Inn, in the resort town of Stowe. Set on 30 spectacular acres of woods and meadow, The Stowehof commands splendid views of Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak as well as the Stowe Valley. A wonderful network of trails fan out from the inn’s door, while numerous other trails (or an auto road, if one so desires) lead to the summit of Mount Mansfield.
