A 5-day trip is really the best way to experience the wonderful hiking and hospitality to be found in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
Our tour begins at the lovely White Mountain Hotel in North Conway, situated under the sheer rock face of White Horse Ledge with expansive views across the valley.
From here we follow a route that leads us through two impressive “notches”, or gulfs, to some of our favorite hikes. Hikes include a misty 200’ waterfall, breathtaking ridges with spectacular views, rushing mountain streams and an old historic railroad bed. Special treats include visits to the Appalachian Mountain Club’s ‘friendly huts’ on the Appalachian Trail.
We then head to the Notchland Inn in Crawford Notch, an 1860s romantic country inn surrounded by 750,000 acres of national forest. From here we explore a vast network of trails in and around the famed Franconia Notch.
Hikes include “The Flume”, an 800-foot-long gorge with sheer 90-foot walls, Lonesome Lake and the Franconia Ridge. We will also take time to discover some of the trails that lead from the scenic Kancamagus Highway, before returning to the White Mountain Hotel.
The final morning offers us two of the most spectacular rock ledges in the east, White Horse and Cathedral Ledges as well as Diana’s Bath, with its numerous rock pools and waterfalls.
